Scheme 2 - Postdoctoral Fellowship 2010-11

The process of assessing this scheme will not be concluded before the end of June 2010, at which point applicants will be informed by letter only of the outcome. The secretariat will not discuss either the issuing of results or the actual results of the scheme over the telephone. Please do not telephone the office about the results.

The Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences has launched 2010-2011 Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowships and the European Commission co-funded Government of Ireland CARA Postdoctoral Mobility Fellowships.

Applications will be sought under the following 3 types of fellowship:

To be eligible to apply to the scheme, applicants must have been awarded their doctoral degree within the five-year period before 31 January 2010 (viva date not graduation date, exceptions include verified maternity or illness leave).

The award of a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship is subject to receipt of funding by IRCHSS from the Department of Education and Science and the European Commission, where appropriate. In the event of such funding being reduced or discontinued, IRCHSS will not be under any liability to provide funding or to compensate a Fellow for any reduction or cessation of such funding.

Revision of Pay: Application of pay adjustments in accordance with the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Act, 2009.

IRCHSS have been directed by the Department of Education and Science to advise all third level institutions on the application in the education sector of pay reductions with effect from 1 January 2010 in accordance with the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Act 2009 (No. 41 of 2009) (the “Act”). In this regard, pay cuts as detailed below will be applied to staff and fellows funded by IRCHSS schemes including the Postdoctoral fellowship scheme (existing and new fellows), Project staff including Research Assistants and Teaching replacements (RDI, Fellowship projects, Thematic projects, GREP). For further clarification please see http://www.finance.gov.ie/viewdoc.asp?DocID=6162. These pay cuts will be applied at source by the institution. Arrangements will be made by IRCHSS to ensure this funding is returned to the exchequer directly in due course.

In accordance with the Act, reductions in basic salary are to be applied with effect from 1st January 2010 as follows:-

• 5% on the first €30,000 of salary;
• 7.5% on the next €40,000 of salary;
• 10% on the next €55,000 of salary.

This formula produces overall reductions in salaries ranging from 5% to 8% in the case of salaries up to €125,000.
